戸室山、医王山で採取される安山岩で、新第三紀中新世 1500万年前の海 底火山の噴火の時のものといわれています。医王山は霊山としても祀ら れ、薬師如来が本地仏とされているだけでなく、落雷地として知られ、雷電 のエネルギーが作用し、医王·戸室山系の岩石と植物に作用し、薬草が多 く育ち、水質を名水に変化させるとする論文が、アメリカの学会で発表され ました。平安時代から薬石として知られ、腹痛、火傷、創傷、湿疹等に効果が あるとして『医王石由来記』に記載され、加賀藩が持ち出し禁止として珍重 しておりました。元正天皇や桓武天皇が病気になられたときに薬草と医王 石を処方され、完治したと伝えられています。昭和 60 年に厚生労働省が 食品添加物として認可されました。
