Rose wood
Ā
Shidan is a member of the rosewood family that has been used as a fine wood since ancient times. It is said to be one of the three great Karaki woods, along with ebony and ironwood. It has a reddish bark with reddish brown to black stripes, and the color tone is quite varied. It is heavy and hard, so it is somewhat difficult to dry and process, but it produces a beautiful finish. It is resistant to insects and fungi, has excellent decay resistance, and some wood has a faint rose fragrance.
